Teaching and Learning at KUIC

Page Section

Our teaching at Keele University International College (KUIC) is tailored to support you in your progression to Keele University.

Teaching

Your KUIC programme is taught in small classes. Depending on your subject, you may also be taught in laboratory/workshop sessions. During classes, you are encouraged to discuss the topics with your tutors and classmates to develop your understanding and familiarity with academic language.

Independent learning

Studying at university is different from studying at school because you are expected to learn independently, outside of your classes. Your KUIC classes will help you familiarise yourself with this method, ensuring you are fully prepared when you progress to your Keele University degree. Your independent learning is supported by full access to Keele University’s world-class teaching and research facilities.

Workload

You will attend at least 15 hours of scheduled classes per week: four hours per subject module and three hours of English for Academic Study. Your overall workload will typically consist of the following:

  • Timetabled contact hours
  • Independent learning
  • Assessed activities
  • Ad-hoc field trips
  • Timetables

Timetables

We provide your timetable once you are registered and enrolled. Scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week, Monday to Friday.

Assessment

You will have opportunities to test your understanding of each module before you complete the formal assessments at the end of your KUIC programme.

For undergraduate programmes, formal assessment methods include:

  • Research project
  • Presentation (individual or group)
  • Closed- and open-book exams
  • Essay
  • Lab report
  • Portfolio
  • Self-reflective journal.

For postgraduate programmes, formal assessment methods include:

  • Critical evaluation
  • Mini dissertation
  • Group project.

The specific assessment methods for your programme are detailed in the programme specifications.

Feedback

Tutors will provide feedback throughout the semester to help you develop, and also at the end of the semester. Feedback is intended to help you learn, and you are encouraged to discuss it with your tutor.

Academic Mentors

We will assign you to a KUIC tutor, who will act as your academic mentor throughout the academic year. One-to-one meeting slots will be available each week, where your mentor will provide academic support, advice and guidance. You can also receive support with any wellbeing issues you want to raise.

Learning Facilities

You will have access to Keele University’s industry-standard facilities from day one of your KUIC classes, including purpose-built laboratories and thousands of resources at the Campus Library.
