Pre-Medicine Pathway

Keele University has partnered with St George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada to offer a unique opportunity: the chance to earn a HECert in Medical Sciences from Keele University and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from SGU. This unique pathway, starting with a Foundation at KUIC, combines world-class education in England with the opportunity to study in the Caribbean.

How does it work?

You will begin by studying Foundation Health and Science (Health) at KUIC before progressing to Keele University’s Certificate of Higher Education in Medical Biosciences. After successfully completing both stages and meeting the required progression criteria, you can progress to SGU’s 4-Year Doctor of Medicine programme (MD4).

Course Details

Year 1: Foundation Health and Science (Health) at KUIC

At KUIC, you will develop the scientific knowledge, English language ability and academic skills needed for further study.

Modules may include:

Biology
Chemistry
Mathematics
Careers in Healthcare
Research Skills
Academic and Digital Skills
English for Academic Study

Year 2: Medical Biosciences at Keele University

You will progress to Keele University to study the Certificate of Higher Education in Medical Biosciences.

Modules may include:

Human Physiology and Anatomy
Molecular Cell Biology
Molecules of Life
Clinical Applications of Biomedical Science
Practical and Academic Skills in Bioscience

Progression to St George’s University

After completing the Medical Biosciences certificate, you can progress to SGU’s MD4 programme, subject to meeting the required academic, English language and admissions criteria.

Students will normally need to achieve:

An overall mark of 60%
At least 60% in each science module
IELTS 7.0 in all components, or an accepted equivalent
A successful SGU academic interview

Progression degrees

Upon successful completion of Year 1 and 2, you will progress to Doctor of Medicine at St George’s University.

You may also have the option to remain at Keele University and progress to BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, subject to meeting the relevant requirements.

Career prospects

MD route

Upon graduation, you can practise as a physician in the US and earn approximately $300,000 per year. With opportunities for clinical rotations in over 75 affiliated hospitals and health systems in the US and the UK, you could choose to specialise in any of the following areas:

Family Medicine
Paediatrics
Surgery
Psychiatry
Emergency Medicine

Biomedical Sciences route

This accredited degree opens a wide range of career paths, and you could pursue the following roles without any further qualifications:

Biomedical Scientist (with the NHS)
Research/Lab Technician

Pharmaceutical Sales Representative

This pathway is marketed as a pre-medicine route. Students will study Foundation Health and Science (Health) at KUIC and the Certificate of Higher Education in Medical Biosciences at Keele University before progressing to SGU.

Progression is subject to meeting all academic, English language, admissions, visa and financial requirements.

Thanks to its accreditations from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), your degree from SGU will enable you to work in countries including the US and the UK. In fact, SGU is the largest provider of new doctors to the US healthcare system.

Industry-standard Facilities

During Year 2 (Medical Biosciences), you will have access to the following facilities on the Keele campus:

Keele Anatomy Department, providing anatomical teaching and resources for health and science students. Facilities include an anatomy suite, complete with dissecting room.
On-campus laboratories, where you will learn to use stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers, and ECG and EMG equipment, make accurate drug dilutions, and gain skills in basic life support on resuscitation manikins.
The Clinical Education Centre (CEC), located on the Royal Stoke University Hospital – just 10 minutes from campus. The Centre features clinical skills laboratories, simulation facilities and a specialist library.
The Health Library within the CEC supports both NHS staff and university students. You will find a range of resources here, including medical journals and databases.
